Over two weeks in January and February 2026 the cast of Signal undertook a creative development as part of a Vacant Room Residency at Vulcana. The aim of this residency was to improve touring potential, increase the accessibility of the work and expand significantly on the creative design of the piece.

One of the key aspects of Signal is a soundtrack that is generated live using a range of sensors and microphones attached to the artists bodies that transmit data to a synthesiser.
This development focused on how stage lighting could be controlled in this way. Creating dynamic and responsive lighting that would give Deaf and Hard of hearing audience members a more accessible expereince.
At the end of the two week development the work was shown to an audience at the Vulcana Arts Hub. Included in the audience were the projects accessibility consultants, at the conclusion of the showing the audience was invite to share feedback on the work as part of a collaborative discussion. Being able to receive positive feedback from our target demographic that the research had successfully yielded a more accessible and interesting artistic product within the experience of their access needs was a highlight of this project
